EDITORIAL REVIEW
5 STARS
Pants on My Head, written by Kelley M Likes and magnificently realized by Mary Barrows, is a fun but educational take on a topic revolving around the daily routine of getting dressed. Specifically designed for children between the ages of 4 and 6, this review dissects the book’s content, style, and general impact to fully understand what makes it great and why it should be included in a young reader’s library. At its core, Pant on My Head is a manual designed to help children properly comprehend and remember the correct way to dawn clothes. The story is organized around a series of amusing mishaps where pants go on heads shoes – on ears, socks – on hands, and so forth. However, these funny scenarios are more than just a comedy skit – they are a lesson in disguise. In the end, children learn that heads wear hats, while socks must go on feet and shirts – on top of your head to emphasize the proper order of clothing one’s body. Style and Illustration Likes’ writing style is very engaging and accessible – she uses repetition and rhyme, which stimulates various cognitive functions in young readers. The phrase “I’ve got your pants on my head”, its variations, and “I’ve got your shoes on my ears,” which are repeated through the book with slight changes, create a rhythm that, while interesting to listen to, also teaches. They entertain and educate at the same time. Barrow’s illustrations are just fantastic – they go so well with the text and provide children with an additional level of humor to enjoy. Bright and colorful, these drawings are expressive and funny but not distracting or confusing – the perfect kind of artwork for a children’s book. They serve the purpose of exciting, not just capturing attention, but also helping children understand the text when the words might be vague for them still, so they serve an educational aspect as well. The empathic nature of the book marked with the help of the colorful illustrations is what makes it an interactive adventure for young readers. Overall Impact One can argue that “Pants on My Head” is one of the most innovative and ingenious books of the category, as it turns a common daily activity into an educational and interesting quest. The book’s simplicity, as well as humor, are its two main strengths. Arguably, one can note that the repetitive nature of the book, although beneficial for the learning process, may disinterest older children who need more complex narratives, so it might not work for them. However, it is a minor flaw, as “Pants on My Head” was written with a certain target audience in mind and suits them perfectly. Its impact is not only about teaching which to wear when but also encouraging kids to try to be independent and feel good when succeeding. The book allows them to explore and find out new things about the world and in the process – about themselves. It is also a wonderful opportunity for parents to hang out with their children in a fun way. Target Audience and Appeal Overall, “Pants on My Head” is a book that certainly hits its mark on the target audience. Considering that the book is aimed at children aged 4 to 6, the text and presentation are certainly appropriate. Moreover, it offers the element of interactivity and the actual value of teaching the child in question how to dress. Indeed, the book stands out as a quality resource for the parent or teacher who seeks to instill self-reliance and hygiene habits in the child and further demystifies the process. In summary, the book by Kelley M Likes is a good read and even an instructive one in this regard. With a good portion of humor, repetitive structure, and vivid illustration, it is a good resource in the early learning toolkit. Although it certainly has an age group in mind, it is charming and educational enough to survive these boundaries and be enjoyed by many children, parents, and teachers alike.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun teaching tool!!
Being silly with kiddos is the best way to help them know what they need to do the correct way.
My favorite was the shoes on my ears. Your ears do tend to be great hanging tools for your sandals!
5.0 out of 5 stars Cute Story, Great Artwork, Repetition for Early Readers
My kids obviously thought this was silly. But quickly they were drawn to the images which are colorful and realistic. They also loved correcting the grownups who were dressed “wrong.” Added bonus is that my 5 year old emerging reader really benefited from the word repetition. Great book!
4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely story for helping kids get dressed
This is a story - a song really - that parents can play with their kids to encourage them to get dressed. It’s a fun story and I enjoyed reading it.

Behind the Story
When my oldest daughter was learning how to get dressed, I wanted her to be more independent. I also wanted to have fun.
I came up with a catchy little tune all about getting dressed the wrong way and she had so much fun correcting me and doing it right.
Mary Barrows provided fun illustrations of parents doing it wrong and kids getting it right!
So have fun in the mornings! Before long, they’ll be out of the house and getting a PhD in Chemical Engineering.

I love the idea and the pictures of Pants on My Head. Many parents need to be taught to be silly. At least that's what I think. I had a few cousins who were so serious and got angry at their kids for so many small things. I think a book like this might have taught them parenting skills while being a delight for their kids.
